Somehow i wish you weren't using a 64bit version of the distro's yeh its out and what not but i don't think its ready for the world yet. or the world for it.

anyway here we go

ensure your device is connected. after that open a terminal ( i use mrxvt )

sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

this'll create a wvdial.conf file for you and scan your ports for a modem

you'll be able to tell if it found anythign by the output.

It'll then write the modem configuration to the wvdial.conf file located here /etc/wvdial.conf

in the event that it found more than one modem devices which it probably shouldn't just look at the output to see the modem identifier in your case it should probably scream sony or Ericson or both.

after this you edit your wvdial.conf file

use your favorite or most familiar editor

sudo vi or gedit /etc/wvdial.conf

ensure that the value "Modem" is equivalent to your device that you wish to use.

The "Baud" value shouldn't matter to be honest because i'm quire sure gprs isn't over the default vaue of 115200 (should mean 115kbps if my brain is working right)

The "Phone" value should be set to *99# sony Ericson phones have reported only getting it to work using *99***4* / *99***4#
Username="provider_username" cable and wireless i think is internet digicel is wapuser
Password="provideer_password" cable and wireless = internet & digicel = wap03jam

I saw this parameter in a tutorial but i'm sure the author is tryign to be funny but then again you never know lol

Stupid Mode = 1

Now that your finished editing your wvdial.conf file you just need to open a console / terminal window and type sudo wvdial

if it works your output should show you something like

wvdial: version
--> intializing modem
--> sending: ATZ COMANDS
OK
MORE CARRIER STUFF
then it should detect the carrier (digicel or cable and wireless or miphone)
pick up your ip address's set dns and then you should be fine.

Hope this help. Post your output. Let me know if this helped

go with the force

we going a bit off topic but.. i think it in the scope of the discussion still.

uh..the lovely ting about Linux is it doesn't mind co-existing. When your installing, It'll ask you what partition you wanna install on. just set some unallocated space it'll leave your windows partition out of the matter. Grub will be installed and it'll _link_ to your win partition. So you can choose windows or Linux at boot up.

why does your password and user name as well as your phone number have "<" and ">" before and after the values? remove them and try again please.

Have you tried changing the phone numbers? re-read my first post.

i told you that the numbers dont work sometimes. Just to be sure call cable and wireless and find out if there really isn't a username and password for using gprs via web access point.

ive used it via windows... same number i use.... *99**3# "3" being the CID number...no username or password needed. *99# just tells the phone to use the first apn.. ie: CID 1..
